INE blocks PAN's proposed sanctions against party members

The Prerogatives and Political Parties Commission of Mexico’s National Electoral Institute (INE) has blocked certain proposed reforms to the National Action Party (PAN) statutes. Specifically, the commission rejected provisions that would allow the party to sanction members labeled as “disloyal.”

Commission members stated that the term introduces a “spectrum of vagueness” and subjective interpretation that could negatively impact the rights of party members. The INE also declined to approve sanctions such as the removal of positions, cancellation of candidacies, or disqualification of party leaders. The commission noted that these proposed measures contradict the PAN’s own statutes, which designate the Justice Commission, rather than the National Political Council, as the competent body for resolving candidate selection and leadership renewal processes.

While rejecting these punitive measures, the commission did approve other reforms, including changes to wording, electoral distinctions, candidate selection processes, and the establishment of a body to protect women’s rights. The draft proposal will now be sent to the INE General Council for potential ratification.
