Overview

The National Electoral Institute (INE) of Mexico has issued several rulings affecting major political parties. Initially, the INE’s Prerogatives and Political Parties Commission blocked proposed reforms by the National Action Party (PAN) that would have allowed the party to sanction members for being “disloyal,” citing a “spectrum of vagueness” that could infringe upon member rights.

Internal friction has also emerged within the ruling coalition. The Labor Party (PT) accused Morena of failing to follow agreed-upon methodologies for conducting surveys to select state coordinators for the 2027 elections, warning that a departure from the alliance could jeopardize up to 12 governorships.

In related legal developments, the TEPJF has issued rulings regarding electoral oversight. The tribunal revoked an INE agreement that permitted individuals linked to social programs, such as ‘Servidores de la Nación’, to serve as electoral observers based solely on a sworn declaration, reinstating the requirement for institutional verification. Furthermore, the TEPJF ruled that the INE cannot prohibit political parties from observing the interviews of electoral supervisors and trainers, citing the parties' constitutional right to oversight.
