Nigeria's INEC outlines preparations and voter data for 2027 elections

As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has outlined several key logistical and regulatory updates. INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan emphasized that the election winners will be determined by the electorate's votes, asserting that the commission remains neutral and committed to the constitution.

Regarding voter data, the National Register of Voters stands at 103.43 million. Lagos State holds the highest number of registered voters with 7,488,633, while Ekiti State has the lowest with 1,055,708. The register is predominantly composed of voters aged 35 to 49.

Logistical planning is underway, with INEC aiming to have officials and materials at polling units by 7:30 a.m. to prevent delays. To ensure security, the Nigerian police intend to use a predictive and risk-analysis strategy to protect 176,846 polling units. Additionally, the commission has warned that political parties fielding candidates not on the official registers will be barred from participating.

Stakeholders, including civil society organizations and the media, are calling for increased scrutiny of political manifestoes, particularly regarding health and economic policies. A Yiaga Africa survey indicates that 84 percent of Nigerians intend to vote in the upcoming elections.
