Nigeria INEC challenges and credibility for 2027 elections
Overview
The Federal High Court’s 30 June Pre‑Election Practice Directions, which repeal 2022 guidelines and introduce weekend filing, virtual hearings and tighter timelines, continue to shape the legal landscape ahead of the 2027 polls. INEC’s timetable for releasing electronic access codes remains uncertain after a postponed nationwide rollout on 28 June; only codes for the off‑cycle Osun governorship election have been distributed. Political pressure persists, with a human‑rights lawyer alleging INEC is yielding to the ruling All Progressives Congress and opposition parties warning the commission is being squeezed between partisan demands and its constitutional mandate. On 14 July 2026 INEC Chairman Prof Joash Amupitan appealed for higher, reliable funding, better staff welfare and greater investment in electoral technology and training, reiterating the 2027 schedule – presidential and National Assembly polls on 16 January and governorship and state‑assembly elections on 6 February – and announced a partnership with the National Identity Management Commission to cleanse the voters’ register. Two weeks later he again called for fiscal autonomy, arguing reliance on the Consolidated Revenue Fund threatens operational freedom and public trust, while the Nigerian Guild of Editors urged closer media‑INEC cooperation to combat misinformation. Later on 23 July 2026, Amupitan pledged that every valid vote cast in the 2027 elections will be counted and urged staff to work with the highest integrity, warning that Nigerians and the international community are watching. He called for constitutional reform to give INEC direct funding from the Federation Account to ensure non‑politicised operations. The commission reported that 6.9 million new voters have been added through its Continuous Voter Registration exercise, pending biometric verification, and confirmed that 74 deregistered parties will be excluded from the upcoming Anambra governorship election, leaving 18 registered parties to contest.
