INEC Chairman addresses 2027 election security and AI
Professor Joash Amupitan, Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has emphasized that the 2027 general elections will be determined by voters rather than algorithms. Speaking at the AI and Democracy Forum in Abuja, Amupitan stated that while artificial intelligence may be used for geospatial analysis and predictive modeling to improve electoral logistics, it will not replace the will of the electorate.
He noted that AI components are already integrated into existing technologies, such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), which utilizes facial recognition and fingerprint technology. Amupitan indicated that the commission is refining its systems to address cybersecurity concerns and ensure technology is used for lawful purposes.
Additionally, during a technical engagement in Abuja, Amupitan reaffirmed that no eligible voter should be denied their rights due to disability or insecurity. He called for enhanced collaboration between INEC and security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, to protect persons with disabilities from intimidation, harassment, and violence during the upcoming elections.
