Nigeria's INEC intensifies 2027 election preparations
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has intensified preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan reaffirmed the commission’s neutrality, stating it has no political affiliations and is committed to upholding the sovereign will of voters. The commission reported over 10.7 million new registrations through recent voter registration phases. However, INEC faces a significant funding gap, with approximately ₦371 billion still required to meet its projected ₦873.78 billion budget for the election cycle.
Legally, the commission is reviewing a Supreme Court judgment that restored key provisions of the Electoral Act 2026. These provisions mandate that political parties submit membership registers to INEC at least 21 days before conducting primaries to ensure only valid members participate in candidate nominations. While INEC maintains its commitment to transparency, political figures like Omoyele Sowore have challenged the commission's independence, alleging ties to the ruling party.
