INEC excludes governorship candidates following Supreme Court ruling

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the omission of several candidates from the final list for the 2027 governorship elections. The commission stated that the exclusions were made to comply with a September 24, 2026, Supreme Court judgment in INEC v. Zenith Labour Party, which upheld the constitutionality of Section 77(5)-(7) of the Electoral Act, 2026.

Under this ruling, political parties are required to submit their digital membership registers to INEC within a specific window—between April 21 and May 10, 2026—to be eligible to sponsor candidates. Parties that failed to meet this deadline are deemed ineligible to field candidates for the elections.

Prominent excluded figures include the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidates Isa Ali Pantami for Gombe State and Ladi Adebutu for Ogun State. Other affected candidates include Aminu Gwarzo of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for Kano State and Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for Cross River State.

INEC has provided a 14-day window for aggrieved political parties to formally notify the commission of any perceived errors or wrongful omissions. The deadline for these notifications is October 24, 2026.
