INEC prepares for 2027 elections with AI tools and new logistics plans

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has initiated several strategic measures to prepare for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan emphasized that while artificial intelligence will play a role in managing information and logistics, algorithms will not decide the election outcome, asserting that human judgment remains paramount.

To address digital threats, INEC has established a specialized AI unit to detect deepfakes and misinformation. Simultaneously, the commission has inaugurated an Electoral Logistics Committee to coordinate the transport of materials via road, air, and sea, involving stakeholders like the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers and the Nigerian Ports Authority.

On the administrative front, Nigeria’s voter register has reached 103 million. INEC is also working to combat voter apathy, vote buying, and electoral violence through partnerships with the National Orientation Agency and security bodies like the EFCC. Additionally, the commission has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity by planning to provide assistive devices for voters with disabilities.
