INEC announces mock accreditation and AI measures for 2027 elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced several strategic measures to prepare for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan revealed plans to conduct a nationwide mock accreditation exercise in November 2026. This exercise is intended to serve as a rigorous field test for the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and other electoral equipment to identify and resolve operational challenges.

To address emerging technological threats, INEC has established a dedicated Artificial Intelligence (AI) Unit. This unit will explore AI applications in data management, voter registration, and results transmission, while developing safeguards against deepfakes and AI-generated disinformation. The commission is also prioritizing cybersecurity and expanding access for women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

These preparations follow the recent Osun State governorship election, which officials cited as a benchmark for improvement. While the commission seeks to build on the lessons from Osun, political actors like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have noted the election's impact on the political landscape, stating it has strengthened their resolve for the 2027 polls. INEC continues to seek international partnerships, specifically with Canada and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, to support electoral integrity and capacity development.
