INEC intensifies 2027 election preparations and anti-misinformation measures

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies are intensifying efforts to combat misinformation and prepare logistics. INEC has scheduled a national stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja to provide updates on the voters’ register, candidate nominations, and electoral integrity measures.

To address the rise of AI-generated disinformation, INEC has disclosed an AI strategy involving a dedicated media monitoring unit and a rapid-response team. The commission is also collaborating with major technology platforms like Meta, Google, and TikTok to mitigate the impact of fake videos and manipulated content. Additionally, INEC has commenced online recruitment for ad hoc election personnel through its INECPRES platform.

Security concerns have also been highlighted by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), which warned against the spread of unverified videos and propaganda that could incite violence. Simultaneously, INEC has issued urgent warnings regarding a fraudulent website falsely claiming that voter registration has reopened, clarifying that the official Continuous Voter Registration exercise concluded on July 26, 2026. The commission urged citizens to verify all information through official channels to avoid data theft.
