INEC initiates 2027 election readiness measures and neutrality warnings
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has launched several initiatives to prepare for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan announced the deployment of a real-time readiness tracker to monitor preparations across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. During a readiness assessment tour in the South-West, Amupitan emphasized the need for strict neutrality among electoral officers, warning that partisan behavior or administrative negligence would not be tolerated.
Addressing inclusivity, INEC officials highlighted a significant gap between women’s voter turnout and their representation in elective offices. While women comprised over 52 percent of recent voter registrants, they held only a small fraction of seats in the Senate and House of Representatives during the 2023 cycle. The commission has urged political parties to move beyond rhetoric and ensure meaningful participation for female candidates.
Security agencies and police commands in various states, including Oyo, Sokoto, and Kogi, have issued warnings against political violence, hate speech, and inflammatory rhetoric. In Kogi, 19 political parties signed a peace accord to commit to peaceful conduct. Additionally, INEC has scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027, with governorship elections to follow on February 6, 2027. Five bye-elections are also set for September 19, 2026, across Gombe, Kano, Bauchi, and Delta states.
