INEC advances 2027 election preparations with 103 million voters

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced significant progress in its preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. Following a three-phase Continuous Voter Registration exercise, the National Register of Voters has surpassed 103 million, with 10,772,421 new registrants added. Lagos State holds the largest voter population with over 7.4 million registered citizens, followed by Kano and Kaduna.

To enhance electoral integrity, INEC is deploying advanced technology, including 57,000 new Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices and a dedicated Artificial Intelligence Division. The AI unit will focus on real-time result verification, anomaly detection, and combating disinformation such as deepfakes, operating under a five-pillar governance framework with mandatory human oversight.

Administrative updates include the scheduled nationwide collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) starting October 9, 2026. INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan also addressed internal matters, noting that the commission has moved to a separate salary structure to improve staff welfare and accountability. Additionally, the commission has urged the Federal Government to release outstanding budget funds to ensure the seamless execution of remaining electoral activities.
