Infant dies after sustaining head injury during emergency cesarean in Brazil

A premature infant, Serena, died following a 7-centimeter deep injury to her head sustained during an emergency cesarean section in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil. A medical report from the Hospital de Clínicas of the University of São Paulo (USP) indicated that the wound, allegedly caused by a scalpel, penetrated at least five protective layers of the head, resulting in the loss of brain mass and damage to the right temporal cortex.

The infant was born at 27 weeks of gestation due to fetal bradycardia. Despite medical interventions, she succumbed to an intracranial hemorrhage on August 20. The mother reported receiving conflicting information from medical staff regarding the severity of the injury. The hospital has launched an investigation into the incident.
