Medical injury and death of infant in Brazil

Overview

In Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, a premature infant named Serena died following an emergency cesarean section. A medical report from the Hospital de Clínicas of the University of São Paulo indicated that a wound, allegedly caused by a scalpel, penetrated at least five protective layers of the infant's head, resulting in the loss of brain mass and damage to the right temporal cortex.

The infant, born at 27 weeks due to fetal bradycardia, succumbed to an intracranial hemorrhage on August 20. The mother reported receiving conflicting information from medical staff regarding the injury, and the hospital has launched an investigation into the incident.
