Shark attacks rise among influencers seeking social media content

Experts are warning of a dangerous trend where social media influencers are being injured or killed while attempting to capture close-up footage or selfies with sharks. Researchers at the International Shark Attack File have noted a significant increase in bites occurring while individuals attempt to film sharks over the last three years.

In Brazil, 37-year-old lawyer and influencer Tayane Dalazen was attacked by a two-meter-long nurse shark during a diving trip. Dalazen reported that tour organizers were feeding the sharks to encourage interaction with tourists. Other recent incidents include a Chinese content creator bitten in the Maldives and a fishing influencer in July who nearly lost a leg to a reef shark.

Scientists, including shark expert Kristian Parton, express concern over the rise of videos showing people swimming too close to, touching, or even riding sharks. This behavior not only poses extreme risks to humans but also causes significant stress to marine wildlife.
