Social media influencer shark interaction risks

Social media influencers are increasingly engaging in high-risk interactions with sharks to create content, leading to rising safety concerns and physical attacks. In Brazil, personality Tayane Dalazen was bitten by a seven-foot nurse shark after tour organizers reportedly fed the animals to encourage tourist interaction. Dalazen, a lawyer and influencer, sustained thigh lacerations during the attack near the Fernando de Noronha archipelago; she has since shared video footage of the incident which has garnered millions of views.

Scientists have noted a growing trend of individuals swimming near, touching, or riding sharks for views. Similar high-risk encounters involving content creators have been reported in the Maldives, including a Chinese content creator bitten in December. Recent incidents include a fishing influencer who nearly lost a leg to a reef shark in July and a tourist in the Caribbean who reportedly lost both hands to a bull shark. Additionally, a snorkeler in Israel was killed while using a selfie stick.

Shark scientist Kristian Parton and other experts note that these encounters are becoming more frequent as individuals increasingly ignore safety protocols to obtain the perfect shot. Parton has reported a weekly increase in footage showing people interacting closely with sharks by petting, holding, or riding them. Researchers at the International Shark Attack File have observed a significant increase in human-shark interactions specifically linked to photography and filming attempts, warning that these behaviors pose serious risks to both humans and marine wildlife.
