Influenza enters early epidemic phase in Japan and Taiwan
Influenza has entered an epidemic phase in Japan with unusual speed, occurring in August—much earlier than the typical late autumn to early spring season. The cause remains unknown, but health officials note that a virus strain which was not dominant last season is currently spreading. The outbreak is also expanding in East Asian regions, including Taiwan.
In response to the early surge, Yokosuka City has moved up its scheduled influenza vaccination program for the elderly. Originally set to begin in October, the city will now start regular vaccinations on September 18, 2026, to mitigate the impact of the early epidemic. Experts are advising increased vigilance, particularly ahead of major holiday travel periods.
