Influenza outbreak hits Japan early, including school cluster in Ishikawa

Japan is experiencing an unusually early influenza outbreak. Nationwide, cases have been increasing in 39 prefectures, with Okinawa reporting the highest number of patients per medical institution.

In Ishikawa Prefecture, the first seasonal outbreak of suspected influenza has occurred, involving a group of 85 students at Komatsu Technical High School who reported symptoms such as fever. The school has been closed until September 8. This outbreak marks an occurrence nine days earlier than the previous season.

Health officials note that because the typical flu season runs from December to April, summer cases are often misidentified as heatstroke or common summer colds, leading to delayed medical consultation.
