Influenza outbreak hits Japan with record-early onset

Japan is experiencing an unusually early influenza outbreak, with the epidemic period beginning significantly ahead of the typical winter season. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare reported that the threshold for epidemic status was met during the week of August 17, marking the second earliest onset on record.

In Oita Prefecture, officials announced the start of the epidemic on September 9 after infection rates exceeded the standard threshold. Experts suggest that the increase in inbound tourism may be contributing to the spread, alongside poor ventilation in air-conditioned indoor spaces during extreme heat.

The outbreak has led to numerous school closures in regions such as Fukushima and Kumamoto. Medical professionals have noted that because many individuals have not yet received their seasonal vaccinations, symptoms may appear more severe. In response, several municipalities, including Tokyo's Shinagawa and Minato wards, are moving up their scheduled vaccination dates for the elderly to late September.
