Influenza outbreak spreads early across Japan
Influenza cases are rising early across Japan, with Fukuoka City issuing an advisory after reports from medical institutions exceeded the threshold of 10 patients per fixed point. This marks the second fastest onset of an epidemic in the past decade, occurring five weeks earlier than last season. As of September 30, 19 educational facilities, including kindergartens and schools, have reported class closures.
Nationwide, the trend shows an early surge. Okinawa has reached the ‘alert level’ with 42.50 cases per medical institution, while Gifu, Aichi, Saitama, and Ibaraki have reached the ‘advisory level’. Experts suggest the early onset may be driven by the influx of travelers from the Southern Hemisphere and insufficient ventilation due to extreme summer heat.
Medical professionals are warning of severe complications such as influenza myocarditis, pneumonia, and encephalopathy, which can affect individuals regardless of age or underlying health conditions. Symptoms requiring immediate medical attention include chest pain, difficulty breathing, or unusual behavior, even after a fever has subsided.
