Infraestruturas de Portugal launches high-speed rail and road works

Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) has commenced construction on the first section of a high-speed rail line connecting Porto and Lisbon. The initial phase, managed by the AVAN consortium, focuses on the Porto-Campanhã to Oiã stretch in Aveiro. This €2 billion project includes 71 kilometers of electrified double track capable of speeds up to 300 km/h, featuring 8 kilometers of tunnels and 19 kilometers of bridges and viaducts. Once the full line is operational, travel time between Porto and Lisbon is expected to decrease from 2 hours and 50 minutes to approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

In addition to rail developments, IP is conducting road maintenance and stabilization works across various regions. In the Médio Tejo area, slope stabilization on the EN118 and EN2 national roads is causing alternating traffic flow in Constância, Abrantes, and Sardoal through November 6.

Meanwhile, rehabilitation works on the Marechal Carmona Bridge have caused significant traffic congestion in Benavente. Local officials have requested the diversion of heavy vehicles to the Lezíria Bridge to alleviate long queues, particularly during peak hours, as the bridge currently operates with reduced lanes.
