Infrastructure and repair projects in Portugal
Overview
Infrastructure development and repair projects are underway in Portugal. In late September 2026, Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) announced investments to repair road damage caused by severe weather. This includes a 2.1 million euro project on the National Road 243 in Porto de Mós to construct reinforced concrete walls and pile curtains, and a 2.75 million euro contract in Penela to restore the former IC3 highway, with a projected reopening in the summer of 2027.
By October 2026, additional regional efforts were reported in Madeira, where the Government of Madeira launched a 2.1 million euro initiative to combat coastal erosion on Porto Santo island. The project involves dredging 75,000 cubic meters of sediment to improve navigability and using 170,000 cubic meters of sand for artificial beach nourishment and dune reconstruction in the Calheta area, with monitoring scheduled through 2028.
Also in October 2026, IP commenced construction on the first section of a high-speed rail line connecting Porto and Lisbon. Managed by the AVAN consortium, the initial phase covers the Porto-Campanhã to Oiã stretch in Aveiro. This €2 billion project features 71 kilometers of electrified double track and is expected to eventually reduce travel time between Porto and Lisbon to approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Concurrently, IP is conducting road maintenance and stabilization works in the Médio Tejo area on the EN118 and EN2, while rehabilitation on the Marechal Carmona Bridge has caused traffic congestion in Benavente.
