Infraestruturas de Portugal restores 56 of 57 road links in Santarém after storm Kristin

Six months after the heavy rainstorm Kristin, Portugal's road authority Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) has repaired 56 of the 57 road interruptions recorded in the Santarém district. The only remaining closure is the national road EN243 in the municipality of Alcanena, with reopening slated for the fourth quarter of 2024 following a €150,000 slope‑stabilisation project that is set to start in August.

Other priority works include stabilising a landslip‑prone slope on EN2 near Abrantes (Espinhaço de Cão) at a cost of about €1.3 million, restoring a segment of EN114 for roughly €1.5 million, and resurfacing EN118 between kilometres 128 and 134 with an investment of over €500 000. These projects, totalling more than €3.4 million, aim to improve drainage, reinforce embankments and ensure safe traffic flow, with some works expected to continue until 2027. Until completion, affected sections operate under alternating traffic controlled by signals.
