Portugal road disruptions and upgrades

Overview

Coordinated temporary measures across Portugal continued through July–August 2026, extending earlier road-work programmes. Night-time traffic restrictions were first imposed on the IP-3 corridor between Tondela and Viseu on 11–13 May, diverting vehicles onto the former EN-2 while concrete barriers and new signage were installed. On 9 July the main IC-3 segment between Penela and Condeixa-a-Nova, closed since February after storm Kristin, reopened partially for a single lane with alternating flow controlled by traffic lights; only light vehicles and emergency services may use it, while heavy-vehicle traffic remains blocked.

Following storm Kristin, Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) has restored 56 of 57 road links in the Santarém district. The sole remaining closure is the EN243 in Alcanena, with reopening expected in the fourth quarter of 2024 after a €150,000 slope-stabilisation project begins in August. Other priority works include a €1.3 million slope stabilisation on EN2 near Abrantes, a €1.5 million restoration of a segment of EN114, and resurfacing on EN118, with some projects expected to continue until 2027.

On the IP-3 corridor, nightly closures between 21:00 and 05:00 are scheduled for 10–13 August. These diversions, which redirect traffic to the EN2, target segments between Tondela Sul and Canas de Santa Maria, and subsequently between Canas de Santa Maria and São Miguel de Outeiro. These interventions are part of a €103 million project to duplicate approximately 27.5 km of the highway to improve connectivity between the coast and the central interior.

Other regional works include the rehabilitation of the historic wall of Santarém, street-cleaning in Reguengos de Monsaraz, and a three-month stabilisation programme on EN-17 in Miranda do Corvo. In Porto, the city council implemented several traffic changes in the Baixa district on 13 July, including new bus corridors and an electric-car lane.
