Infrastructure assessments launched in Ecuador and Costa Rica

In Ecuador, the Instituto de Investigación Geológico y Energético (IIGE) will conduct geotechnical drilling between August and November 2026 in the Zaruma and Portovelo cantons of El Oro province. The project involves approximately 40 drillings to identify the physical and mechanical characteristics of the subsoil. This data will provide scientific criteria for soil bearing capacity to support safe and sustainable urban planning for approximately 10,559 inhabitants.

In Costa Rica, the Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y de Arquitectos (CFIA), the University of Costa Rica (UCR), and the Costa Rica Institute of Technology (TEC) have released the 2026 Infrastructure Report. This inaugural diagnostic tool evaluates the condition and management of public infrastructure across several sectors, including airports, drinking water, roads, electricity, bridges, and ports. The assessment uses a scale of 0 to 100 based on dimensions such as capacity, condition, funding, future needs, operation and maintenance, security, resilience, and innovation.
