Overview

Infrastructure and public works initiatives continue in Ecuador and Costa Rica, focusing on road maintenance, technological monitoring, and security.

In Ecuador, road maintenance efforts by Lowell Mineral Exploration Ecuador continued throughout August in the Limón–Warints corridor of Morona Santiago. Interventions in San Juan, Pirisho, and Victoria included road reshaping, cleaning the Shiramentza river ford, and clearing 5.27 kilometers of vegetation. In the Victoria sector, teams also removed six landslides to improve transit safety.

Research into road conditions has also expanded in Ecuador. In Santa Elena, researchers from the State University of Península de Santa Elena utilized drone-based photogrammetry to assess nearly 2 kilometers of urban roads. The study identified various forms of deterioration, such as longitudinal cracks and potholes, finding that 55.56% of the analyzed sections showed medium severity and 33.33% showed high severity.

In Costa Rica, the Municipality of Limón’s expanded citizen security system received an award from the Instituto de Fomento y Asesoría Municipal (IFAM). Under Mayor Ana Matarrita McCall, the municipality grew its video protection network from 20 cameras in 2024 to 132 devices. This system employs artificial intelligence and forensic analysis to identify specific characteristics of people and vehicles. Operational capacity was further bolstered by a new fleet of vehicles and motorcycles donated by the United States Embassy to serve the districts of Limón, Matama, Río Blanco, and Valle La Estrella.
