Infrastructure reconstruction efforts underway in Costa Rica and Chile

Regional authorities in Costa Rica and Chile are implementing reconstruction projects to repair infrastructure damaged by extreme weather events.

In Pérez Zeledón, Costa Rica, the Emergency Program for Integral and Resilient Infrastructure Reconstruction (PROERI) is working to rebuild five schools in the Daniel Flores, Rivas, and Cajón districts. These institutions, including Escuela Daniel Flores Zavaleta and Escuela República de México, suffered damage during Hurricane Julia in 2022. The project involves an investment of over ₡1.9 billion, aiming to benefit approximately 700 students with modern and safe facilities. Completion is projected for the second half of 2026.

In the Tarapacá region of Chile, the Regional Committee for Disaster Risk Management (COGRID) has approved an initial $1.198 billion allocation from a larger $1.51 billion fund to address climate emergencies. The funds are prioritized for basic infrastructure, including the repair of health centers like Cesfam Cirujano Aguirre in Iquique and medical facilities in Alto Hospicio. Additionally, the plan includes the urgent rehabilitation of seven educational establishments and support for rural medical posts and livestock producers in the highlands.
