Overview

Authorities in Costa Rica and Chile are undertaking infrastructure reconstruction projects to address damage caused by extreme weather and climate emergencies.

In Costa Rica, the Emergency Program for Integral and Resilient Infrastructure Reconstruction (PROERI) is rebuilding five schools in the Daniel Flores, Rivas, and Cajón districts that were damaged during Hurricane Julia in 2022. This project involves an investment of over ₡1.9 billion and is expected to benefit approximately 700 students with safe, modern facilities by the second half of 2026.

In Chile’s Tarapacá region, the Regional Committee for Disaster Risk Management (COGRID) has approved an initial $1.198 billion allocation from a $1.51 billion fund. These funds are designated for basic infrastructure, including the rehabilitation of seven educational establishments, the repair of health centers such as Cesfam Cirujano Aguirre in Iquique, and support for rural medical posts and livestock producers.
