Latin America responds to earthquakes and severe weather

Multiple regions across Latin America are responding to various natural disasters, including earthquakes and severe weather events.

In Colombia, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake has caused significant damage in Risaralda, with approximately 90 deaths reported and numerous buildings collapsed. In Pereira, rescue teams and volunteers are working to assist survivors, while the National Institute of Health has deployed emergency response teams to Buenaventura to manage public health risks. In Dosquebradas, social workers are characterizing affected families to coordinate shelter and food aid.

Chile is managing the aftermath of intense frontal systems. In the Atacama region, authorities have deployed emergency command posts to coordinate responses to heavy rainfall. In Valdivia, municipal teams have provided nearly 700 forms of aid to families affected by precipitation. Other efforts include repairing rural roads in Ovalle and conducting housing damage assessments in La Araucanía, while the Ñuble region reports that 98% of its affected roads have been recovered.

In Peru, health authorities in Lima East have implemented the ‘Kallpa’ strategy to strengthen disaster preparedness for potential seismic events and El Niño. Meanwhile, in Venezuela, technical crews are performing structural repairs on buildings in Caracas following recent seismic activity to ensure resident safety.
