Natural disasters and recovery in Latin America

A series of seismic events and severe weather patterns have triggered widespread humanitarian and recovery efforts across several Latin American nations.

In Colombia, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake centered in San José del Palmar, Chocó, has caused significant destruction. Reports indicate approximately 90 deaths and numerous building collapses in Risaralda. In response, the community-led platform ‘Colombia Te Busca’ was launched to help citizens locate missing relatives. Emergency response teams have been deployed to Buenaventura to manage public health risks, while social workers in Dosquebradas are coordinating shelter and food aid.

In Peru, a 5.0 magnitude earthquake has left residents in the Huasicancha area of Huancayo without homes. Families are facing extreme hardship, struggling against sub-zero temperatures in the Canipaco valley. While the Archdiocese of Huancayo has provided some food and clothing, locals report that aid is insufficient and are requesting temporary housing modules. In Lima East, health authorities have implemented the ‘Kallpa’ strategy to strengthen disaster preparedness for future seismic events and El Niño.

Other regional responses include structural repairs in Caracas, Venezuela, following seismic activity, and managing intense frontal systems in Chile. In Chile’s Atacama region, authorities have established emergency command posts to coordinate responses to heavy rainfall, while municipal teams in Valdivia and other regions continue to provide aid and repair rural infrastructure.
