Infrastructure updates in the Netherlands: A1 closures and Afsluitdijk bus suspension
Rijkswaterstaat has announced several night-time closures on the A1 motorway towards Amsterdam between late October and mid-November. The maintenance work focuses on on-ramps, off-ramps, and the parallel lane between the Eemnes and Muiderberg junctions. Specific disruptions include the closure of exit 8 at Blaricum towards Amsterdam from October 26 to October 30, and various closures at De Witte Bergen and Hilversum-Noord throughout November. Work is scheduled on weekdays between 21:00 and 05:00 to minimize daytime traffic impact.
Additionally, the free shuttle bus service for cyclists on the Afsluitdijk will be temporarily suspended starting November 1 due to low winter ridership. While the service sees approximately 3,000 users monthly during the summer, winter usage averages fewer than 30 people per month. The service is expected to resume on March 1. To provide a more permanent solution, temporary bicycle bridges are planned for installation, which are estimated to cost 5 million euros, significantly less than the 14 million euros required to maintain the bus service during ongoing dike reinforcement works.
