German and Austrian police intensify traffic checks and speed enforcement
Police forces in Germany and Austria carried out a series of traffic control operations in late July and early August 2026. In Vienna, officers seized several modified e‑scooters that could reach speeds of up to 90 km/h, and stopped drivers for speeding, traffic‑sign violations and driving under the influence. Similar checks in Hannover found that more than one in ten drivers and e‑scooter riders were under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and 190 vehicles were ordered off the road.
A nationwide speed‑enforcement campaign known as the "Blitzermarathon" was launched across most German states, with police setting up mobile and stationary speed cameras to curb excessive speed. The campaign was not taken up by Saxony, which instead ran a local school‑focused speed check.
Several incidents involving weapons also occurred during routine stops. In Dortmund, officers secured a Kalashnikov‑type rifle, a disabled assault rifle, a gas‑pistol, an air‑gun and other knives. In Ludwigsburg, a 23‑year‑old man threatened a taxi driver with a firearm; a blank‑firing weapon was later recovered from his apartment. In a separate traffic stop in Bremen, a 21‑year‑old presented a water‑pistol that resembled a real gun. In Austria, a 24‑year‑old racer ignored a police officer brandishing a weapon on the A1 and fled the scene.
Other traffic‑related actions included the seizure of high‑speed e‑scooters, the arrest of drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and the enforcement of speed limits on highways and city streets, reflecting a broad police effort to improve road safety.
