INGV launches iCEALP project to study ice‑climate‑solid Earth coupling in Alps and Greenland

The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) has started the iCEALP research programme – ice‑Climate‑solid Earth coupling driving ALPine uplift – as part of its Dynamic Planet 2026‑2029 plan. The project is coordinated by lead researcher Enrico Serpelloni and brings together a multi‑disciplinary consortium that includes the University of Torino, Fondazione Montagna Sicura, University of Milano‑Bicocca, University of Bologna, University of Trento, ENEA, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich and Denmark’s DTU Space.

Its primary aim is to quantify how glacier melt, drought and extreme hydrological events modify stress and deformation of the crust, linking these effects to the tectonic processes that shape mountain ranges. Key technological outputs are a Digital Twin of the Alpine system and an advanced simulator that merges geodetic, seismological and satellite data to generate forecasts up to 2050. The programme will also install a new integrated geophysical observatory, AMIGHO, on Monte Rosa and will conduct field work in two natural laboratories – the Alps and Greenland – upgrading the HySO polar observatory in Wolstenholme Fjord to calibrate three‑dimensional numerical models.
