INPer warns of 12-year delay in endometriosis diagnosis

The National Institute of Perinatology (INPer) has issued a recommendation for women experiencing menstrual pain, chronic pelvic pain, or pain during intercourse to seek specialist consultation. Experts warn that the diagnosis of endometriosis—a chronic inflammatory disease where uterine tissue grows outside the uterus—can be delayed by 10 to 12 years.

Oliver Paul Cruz Orozco, head of the INPer Endometriosis Clinic, noted that some patients undergo between four and six surgeries without achieving positive results due to delayed or inaccurate diagnoses. The disease can lead to infertility and, if lesions affect other organs, intestinal or urinary symptoms.

To address this, INPer utilizes a multidisciplinary model involving specialists in gynecology, radiology, neurology, urology, and other fields. Diagnostic methods include clinical evaluation, physical examination, transvaginal ultrasound mapping, and MRI. According to the institute, 91 percent of patients treated at their clinic show improvement in pain levels.
