INS Malvan Commissioned with Indigenous Steel from ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India

The Indian Navy commissioned INS Malvan, an anti‑submarine warfare shallow‑water craft, on 22 July 2026 at Karwar, Karnataka. Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, the vessel is the second of eight Mahe‑class ASW‑SWCs and features more than 80 % indigenous content.

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India supplied 100 % of the specialised naval‑grade steel from its Hazira, Gujarat plant. The steel meets stringent quality standards required for underwater surveillance, anti‑submarine, mine‑warfare and coastal‑security operations. Ranjan Dhar, Director & Vice‑President of Sales & Marketing at AM/NS India, said the commissioning demonstrates how advanced Indian manufacturing supports defence preparedness and the country’s self‑reliance initiatives (Aatmanirbhar and Viksit Bharat). AM/NS India has also provided steel for other naval platforms such as INS Visakhapatnam and INS Surat, as well as major infrastructure projects like the Chenab Railway Bridge.
