Insolvency trends rise in Austria as private and corporate debt pressures mount

Insolvency trends in Austria are showing significant shifts in both the corporate and private sectors. In Styria, private debt restructuring proceedings rose by 19.1 percent during the first three quarters of 2026, with 822 cases reported compared to 690 in the previous year. This increase is attributed to the expiration of a three-year debt relief option in mid-July, alongside high living costs, inflation, and a tight labor market. The average debt per debtor has risen to approximately 129,000 euros.

Nationally, corporate insolvencies remained relatively stable with 5,139 filings in the first nine months of 2026, averaging 19 bankruptcies per day. However, a concerning trend has emerged where 43 percent of corporate insolvency filings—2,204 cases—were rejected because companies lacked the minimum 4,000 euros required to cover opening costs. This rise in rejected cases, which increased by 12.6 percent, places a higher financial burden on creditors. The retail, construction, and gastronomy sectors are among those most affected by these economic pressures.
