Insomnia in Spain causes massive socioeconomic loss
A new report titled ‘Socioeconomic Impact of Insomnia in Spain,’ presented by Cigna Healthcare España, reveals that 43.4% of the adult population in Spain experiences insomnia episodes, with 14% suffering from chronic insomnia. The study estimates the annual loss of well-being due to sleep issues at 207,722 million euros, approximately 12% of Spain's 2025 GDP.
On an individual level, the loss of well-being varies significantly by severity: 6,407 euros annually for subclinical cases, 15,770 euros for moderate cases, and up to 43,073 euros per year for severe cases. The data shows that 40% of those with sleep problems use benzodiazepines, while 33% use melatonin, but only 16% seek psychological therapy.
Psychologist Roser Gort emphasizes that while medication can be a necessary temporary measure for extreme suffering, it often masks underlying issues like stress and lifestyle habits without providing a permanent cure. She suggests that ‘brain re-education’ may offer a non-pharmacological solution to restore natural sleep patterns.
