Insomnia linked to increased risks of stroke, dementia, and mental health issues

A comprehensive international review published in the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews has linked persistent insomnia to significantly increased risks of stroke, dementia, and various mental health issues. Researchers from Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland analyzed data from approximately 20 large-scale studies involving millions of participants globally.

The findings indicate that individuals with insomnia face a 26% greater risk of stroke and nearly 30% higher odds of being hospitalized for any reason. The study also identified a connection between chronic sleep disruption and an increased likelihood of developing dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Regarding mental health, the review found that those experiencing insomnia were more likely to suffer from depression and attempt suicide. Medical experts noted a compounding feedback loop where anxiety and depression disrupt sleep, while poor sleep quality subsequently reduces stress resilience and increases vulnerability to psychiatric disorders.
