Insomnia linked to increased stroke, dementia, and mental health risks

A systematic review published in the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews has identified significant links between chronic insomnia and several serious health conditions. Researchers from Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland analyzed data from multiple studies involving millions of participants.

The research found that insomnia is associated with a 26% increased risk of stroke. Additionally, the study noted connections between persistent sleep issues and higher rates of dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease, as well as depression and suicidal behavior. The findings also indicated that individuals with insomnia have nearly 30% higher odds of being hospitalized for various reasons.

Experts emphasize that while these findings show strong associations, they do not prove that insomnia directly causes these conditions. Medical professionals also noted a potential two-way relationship between sleep and mental health, where anxiety and depression can cause insomnia, which in turn can exacerbate mental health struggles.
