Brazil adjusts 2026 budget to increase Bolsa Família benefits
The Brazilian federal government has announced significant adjustments to the 2026 budget to accommodate a 15% increase in Bolsa Família benefits. The minimum benefit will rise from R$ 600 to R$ 691, with the average payment expected to reach R$ 777. This adjustment, estimated to cost R$ 5.8 billion in 2026, is being funded by reducing expenditure projections for Social Security, the Continuous Cash Benefit (BPC), and other administrative costs.
To facilitate these changes, the government reduced the total 2026 budget containment from R$ 17.9 billion to R$ 16.1 billion. However, the fiscal deficit estimate has been raised from R$ 52 billion to R$ 80.9 billion.
In a separate administrative update, the Ministry of Social Security announced that INSS beneficiaries who vote in the 2026 elections will have their attendance automatically recorded as proof of life. This data-sharing measure between the Electoral Justice and the INSS aims to reduce the need for physical visits to banks or agencies. Officials clarified that failing to vote will not result in the suspension of social security benefits, as the government will continue to use other digital records to verify beneficiaries.
