INSS reports significant reduction in benefit waiting list

The Brazilian National Institute of Social Security (INSS) has reported a significant reduction in its benefit analysis waiting list, which fell to 1.282 million requests as of late August 2026. This represents a 59% decrease from the 3.073 million pending requests recorded in January 2026. Notably, the number of requests awaiting analysis for more than 45 days dropped by 86%, falling to 261,000.

Alongside the shrinking queue, the INSS has reached record levels of benefit concessions, averaging 730,000 per month between January and July 2026—a 67% increase compared to the same period in 2022. The average processing time for benefits is currently 35 days, with specific timelines including 11 days for maternity leave, 30 days for disability benefits, and 65 days for social assistance benefits. Medical examination queues have also seen an 84% reduction.

In related legal developments, the Federal Justice Council (CJF) has released R$ 2.75 billion specifically for INSS-related back payments to over 173,000 beneficiaries who won judicial actions. Additionally, the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) continues to monitor the agency, maintaining social security benefits on its high-risk list due to concerns regarding operational efficiency and the volume of requests exceeding legal deadlines.
