Insta360 introduces Spatial Capture for 3D scene reconstruction

Insta360 has announced Spatial Capture, a new feature that utilizes 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) technology to transform 360-degree video footage into interactive, explorable 3D environments. By recording a space while moving through it, users can generate a three-dimensional reconstruction that allows viewers to virtually navigate the scene from various angles and positions.

The feature is scheduled to roll out in the United States on September 28 and is compatible with the Insta360 X6, X5, and X4 Air models. The workflow involves recording up to two minutes of video, selecting the footage within the Insta360 app, and utilizing cloud processing to generate the final scene. Once processed, the interactive environments can be shared via links, allowing others to explore the space without needing to download specific files or applications.

Potential applications for this technology include documenting changing environments, such as family homes before a move, temporary art exhibitions, or commercial venues like studios and shops. This allows for high-quality 3D documentation using a single handheld device rather than specialized, expensive hardware.
