Insta360 Spatial Capture technology launch
Overview
Insta360 has announced Spatial Capture, a new feature that employs 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) technology to convert 360-degree video footage into interactive, explorable 3D environments. This technology allows users to create high-quality three-dimensional reconstructions of real-world spaces—such as homes, art exhibitions, or commercial venues—using a single handheld device rather than specialized hardware.
The feature is compatible with the Insta360 X6, X5, and X4 Air models. To use the service, users record up to two minutes of video while walking through a space, maintaining specific paths to capture sufficient viewpoints. The footage undergoes cloud-based processing via the Insta360 mobile app, with results typically ready in approximately 40 minutes. For optimal results, it is recommended that users focus on spaces smaller than 100 square meters.
While the feature is available in several countries, the rollout in the United States is scheduled for September 28, 2026. The service includes a quota of four free captures per month, after which a credit-based system is required.
Unlike traditional photogrammetry or Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF), the 3DGS method uses a cloud of optimized 3D Gaussian primitives to represent scenes. This approach enables high-speed, real-time 3D visualization and is particularly effective at rendering complex materials like glass, water, and vegetation.
