Instagram unveils first major wordmark redesign in over a decade

Instagram has unveiled its first major wordmark redesign in over a decade. The Meta-owned platform is transitioning from its long-standing cursive typography to a new visual identity that combines handwritten elements with a cleaner, more modern aesthetic.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri described the update as a way to make the brand feel sharper and less dated while still referencing its original identity. The redesign includes a new typographic system featuring Instagram Pen, Instagram Mono, and updates to Instagram Sans. While the colorful camera icon remains unchanged, the text-based logo used at the top of the app and in brand assets is being overhauled.

The rollout has met with mixed reactions from users. Many have criticized the new lettering for its legibility, specifically noting that the stylized “r” can be easily mistaken for a “z,” leading to viral jokes about the name being read as “Instagzam” or “Instaguam.” Despite the online scrutiny, Meta officials stated the design aims to better reflect the creativity and individuality of the platform's community.
