Eli Lilly reports strong phase‑3 results for obesity drug retatrutide
Eli Lilly announced that its experimental obesity drug retatrutide produced significant weight loss in two phase‑3 trials. In participants with obesity and cardiovascular disease, the highest dose led to an average loss of up to 22.6 % of body weight after 80 weeks. In a separate trial of people with type‑2 diabetes, participants lost up to 20.8 % of their weight over the same period. The drug also lowered HbA1c by 1.6 percentage points in the diabetic group. The most frequent side effects were digestive issues such as nausea and diarrhoea, and a small subgroup showed a higher incidence of serious cardiovascular events. Retatrutide acts on three hormonal pathways – GLP‑1, GIP and glucagon receptors – to curb appetite and improve metabolic control. Eli Lilly plans to file a Biologics License Application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the first quarter of 2027. The company previously reported strong sales growth for its GLP‑1 drugs tirzepatide (Mounjaro/Zepbound), which rose 125 % and 80 % respectively in Q1 2026, underscoring the importance of its pipeline of weight‑loss treatments.
