Institutions in Chile and Colombia implement breastfeeding support spaces

Institutions in Chile and Colombia are expanding dedicated spaces to support breastfeeding mothers.

In Chile, the Regional Ministerial Secretariat (Seremi) of Health of Antofagasta officially recognized the breastfeeding room at the Hospital Regional de Antofagasta (HRA). The accreditation confirms the facility meets technical, sanitary, and infrastructural standards for milk extraction and storage, including privacy, hygiene, and comfort. This initiative aligns with Chilean Law 21.155 and labor regulations designed to protect the rights of working mothers.

In Colombia, the Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas is consolidating its ‘Salas Amigas de la Familia Lactante’ (SAFL) program. These spaces are designed to provide privacy, hygiene, and security for students, faculty, and staff. Currently operational in several campuses, including the Faculty of Engineering and the ASAB Faculty of Arts, the university is working to expand these facilities to additional sites to help prevent the early interruption of breastfeeding within higher education environments.
