Santa Catarina faces record cold as temperatures plunge below zero

A polar air mass swept across Brazil's southern state of Santa Catarina, bringing intense cold and widespread frost. On June 15, high‑altitude towns recorded sub‑zero temperatures, with São Joaquim hitting –4.7 °C, Urupema –2.7 °C, Urubici –2.2 °C and Bom Jardim da Serra –1.8 °C. The cold front also produced frost on the ground and low‑lying fog, reducing visibility on roads.

Meteorological services warned that the cold spell will continue through the week, with daytime highs remaining between 13 °C and 20 °C and night‑time lows often near 0 °C or lower in the mountainous regions. The state’s Civil Defense urged residents to dress warmly, protect exposed pipes, watch elderly and children closely, and stay alert for fog‑related travel hazards. The cold is expected to persist, with a chance of additional frost and isolated showers later in the week.
