Intense Heat Waves Hit Puerto Rico and Northern Mexico
A tropical wave moving over the Caribbean is bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms to interior and western Puerto Rico while a heat advisory remains in effect for most of the island. Temperatures are expected to reach a high of about 91 °F (106 °F heat index) with moderate wind gusts and a risk of dangerous marine currents along exposed beaches. The dry air mass carrying Saharan dust will later reduce rainfall for the rest of the week.
Meanwhile, a severe heat wave is sweeping northern Mexico. In the state of Tamaulipas, municipalities such as Matamoros, Reynosa, Nuevo Laredo, Tampico, El Mante and Ciudad Victoria are forecast to see maximum temperatures between 35 °C and 39 °C. Light showers are expected in nearby states, while wind gusts of 40‑60 km/h affect the border region. Both areas face heightened health risks from the extreme heat.
