Tamaulipas‑Puerto Rico heat wave intensifies

Entities: Nuevo Laredo · Reynosa · Tamaulipas · Matamoros · Dr. Ricardo Guerrero Morales

Overview

The early‑July forecast for a heat wave across Tamaulipas and El Paso materialised, with temperatures climbing to 40 °C (105 °F) and heat advisories issued on both sides of the border. Residents were urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity and protect against UV exposure.

By July 27 the episode persisted. Puerto Rico remained under a heat advisory as a tropical wave brought scattered showers, temperatures near 91 °F and a heat index of about 106 °F, moderate gusts and hazardous marine currents along exposed beaches. Simultaneously, northern Mexico’s Tamaulipas municipalities—including Matamoros, Reynosa, Nuevo Laredo, Tampico, El Mante and Ciudad Victoria—were forecast to see highs of 35‑39 °C with wind gusts of 40‑60 km/h, while a dry Saharan‑dust plume suppressed further rain for the week.

By July 30 the heat intensified further; forecasts called for daytime highs of 40‑45 °C and heat‑index values above 50 °C in cities such as Ciudad Victoria, Reynosa and Matamoros. The state health directorate urged residents to hydrate, stay in shade and avoid strenuous outdoor work. Isolated showers of 5‑25 mm and occasional thunderstorms may bring brief relief, but wind gusts of 40‑60 km/h persist and the dry dust layer is expected to keep precipitation minimal for the next two‑to‑three weeks across northern and central Mexico.
