Inter-American Court to judge Peru over Mashco Piro indigenous rights
The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) will hold a public hearing on September 24 and 25 in Montevideo, Uruguay, regarding the Mashco Piro, an indigenous group living in isolation in the Peruvian Amazon.
Indigenous organizations, including the Native Federation of the Madre de Dios River and Tributaries (FENAMAD) and EarthRights International, allege that the Peruvian state has endangered the group by granting extractive concessions within their multiethnic territory. These activities have contributed to forest fragmentation and degradation.
Claimants argue that the presence of third parties and deforestation increase the risk of forced contact and the transmission of infectious diseases to a population with little immunity. The court's decision may establish international responsibility for Peru and set new standards for protecting the rights and territories of isolated indigenous peoples.
